Stand by Me | Ethiopia
October 2009
Where the streets have no name
In October Mr Bennett visited Bethany Primary School in the town of Bekoji, which is located 170miles south of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The town of Bekoji has around 33,000 inhabitants similar to Carrickfergus and the school, which was officially opened in February, has 270 pupils attending. The school has become one of the best schools in the region even though it is surrounded by extreme poverty and has very few resources. Over half of the children at the school are orphans and many have HIV. However, in the midst of this sad and beautiful place are enthusiastic and loving young people receiving a great education with the hope of ending for them and their family the circle of poverty.
Carrickfergus College are planning a number of 'Stand by Me' events to help build 2 new classrooms in the New Year. For more information check out www.kidsaliveuk.org.
