Femininity Conference
October 2009
On Friday 9th October a group of year 13/14 girls left school for an ICT conference in the Waterfront Hall. The conference was called femininity and was especially targeted to girls. The conference was to give girls an idea of the courses and job routes available with ICT. Our girls enjoyed learning about the Robots that Microsoft are developing and also the different courses available at Queens University. During their time at the Queens Workshop the girls were able to try out Haptics (this is a robotic simulation that surgeons use to practise surgery) and also see some of the projects that Queens students were working on.
Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane attended the event along with leading females within the ICT industry including figureheads from Microsoft and Google as well as representatives from Northern Ireland’s Universities. Several interactive workshops were held throughout the day with topics ranging from the practical side of ICT to the future of robotics. The workshops incorporated break out sessions allowing the pupils to put questions to the guests, discuss some of the stereotypes that surround the industry and the prospects available should they decide to pursue a computing related career.
All in all the girls enjoyed the day and were able to see the relevance of their studies to future university courses and careers.
