Pharmacists in School
June 2010
An innovative new programme from Queen's University School of Pharmacy arrived in Carrickfergus College on Wednesday 16th June.
Sixty year 10 pupils prepared treatments based on prescriptions for fictional patients. They made pink and blue mouthwashes, prepared a medicine for a child, and made a steroid cream preparation, under the expert guidance of four staff from the Pharmacy School.
When the medicines were prepared, students labelled and dispensed them to their science teachers, and became "Pharmacists for a day".
The scheme encourages pupils from Carrick College to apply what they've learned in lessons to a practical situation. It gives the pupils a flavour of another type of science-related career into which some of our pupils may go. It should also encourage students to feel more able to consult Pharmacists in the high street about health and medicines issues.
A very enjoyable and educational experience for all: pupils, teachers and pharmacists!
