RAF Maths Workshop
February 2010
Pupils participated in seven Maths activities. Each activity focused on a different Maths topic presented within an RAF theme. The activities included:
- Reaction Times Activity, a laptop-based game which tested pupils' reaction times under different conditions
- Field Hospital Activity, in which pupils used investigative measures to work out prescription codes in an RAF Field Hospital
- Catering Activity, in which pupils used algebra to plan and co-ordinate a meal for personnel on an airbase
- Cargo Activity, in which pupils worked out how best to load a cargo bay
- Observation Activity, in which pupils identified aircraft and specific shapes from an aerial photograph
- Health and Safety Activity, in which pupils used decibel meters to measure and estimate noise levels
- Navigation Activity, in which pupils plotted the co-ordinates and arranged the flight plan for an important mission.
Pupils participated well and seemed to enjoy the challenge. Pupils commented that it was fun and did show the relevance of Maths. The organisation of the workshop was excellent and the tutors enthusiastic.
