Worldwide Safer Internet Day 2010
February 2010
Carrickfergus College students took part in the 'Safer Internet Day 2010'. The activities were organised by Insafe which is the European Safer Internet awareness-raising network co-funded by the European Commission and coordinated by European Schoolnet.
Hundreds of online and offline activities were organised on Tuesday 9 February 2010 to celebrate the wonderful opportunities the internet offers for learning and leisure and to focus the attention of all children and teenagers, on the means to manage their online identity in a responsible way.
Carrickfergus College Year 9 & 10 Students joined Year 9 Students from St Pius X High School, St Mary's Grammar School and Rainey Endowed School in a '4 way' video conference on Tuesday 9 February 2010 to mark Safer Internet Day 2010.
The students held a discussion on the ten 'Communication Golden Rules':
- Be responsible online - do not hide behind your screen.
- Use chat and instant messaging sites for young people, preferably with moderators.
- Do not circulate messages, pictures or other material that can be hurtful.
- Create safe profiles.
- Share images only with people you know and trust.
- Learn how to decline and block unwanted contacts.
- Decline contacts from strangers.
- Refuse meeting people you do not know, even if they have become your 'online friends'. Always tell your parents: better safe than SORRY.
- Disconnect from the internet when you're not using it.
- Use a webcam only with people you know - disconnect it when you're not using it.
Mr O'Loughlin (ICT Teacher at Carrickfergus College) said:
'All students at Carrickfergus College are educated in Internet and On-Line Safety as part of their weekly ICT lessons in years 8-10 and the inter schools video link has served as a useful reminder on the principles of good practice which children and young people should follow when using the internet at home and in their spare time.'
Many similar events have been organised today in schools across the World to educate our children in the many opportunities the internet offers and focus the attention of students, on the steps they can take to manage their online identity in a responsible way.'
Safer Internet Day 2010 also marked the launch of the web version of the highly popular eSafety toolkit (www.esafetykit.net) funded by the European Commission which contains easy to read safety tips categorised into different topics.
