Art Trip to Sentry Hill
September 2009
On Friday 11th September 2009 lower and upper sixth pupils had the pleasure of visiting Sentry Hill. Sentry Hill is a property sold to the Newtownabbey Council by the descendants of William McKinney who owned the farm land and property. William was an enthusiastic photographer who recorded the lives of the family and the farming community around them. He was also an avid writer who documented events throughout the twentieth century including the effect the First World War had on Irish family life.
Sentry hill has a museum, educational room, video theatre, and the house which has been restored and left as the family occupied it full of personal belongings giving a glimpse of past lives.
We were greeted and shown around by Deirdre and Wesley who were highly informative of the family and the lives of all connected to them. The pupils were able to photograph objects which were rich in stimulus and learn of the past which they could relate to their own projects. Sentry Hill is a terrific resource for pupils and even a delightful venue for a family visit. It is of rich historic value and has a fabulous team in Deirdre and Wesley who give an extremely knowledgeable insight into the property and it’s inhabitants.
