District Schools' Cross Country
February 2010
Ormeau Park, Belfast
Tuesday 2th February, 2010
A total of 23 competitors from Carrickfergus College made the journey to Ormeau Park in Belfast, for the annual District B Cross Country Championships. The first race of the day was the Minor girls (Year 8), and as this was their first competition our girls did well to finish 10th overall in the team standings. One of the outstanding results of the day also came from this race, and what a way to start! Emma Sugden ran an excellent race from the gun, keeping herself well up in the front pack for most of the race and finished 8th overall. This result gained her a place in the Ulster Schools Championships. The minor boys also competed well, finishing 15th overall in the team standings.
In the Junior girls (Years 9 and 10) Rebecca Topping, Jenna McElvogue and Chloe Allen all finished strongly, helping the team gain 7th.
Our Inter Girls (Year 11 and 12) were unfortunately depleted in number and so it fell to two of our more seasoned cross country runners to represent the college as individuals. Jemma Hartley and Jordan Maxwell have been members of the cross country squad for several years now and both have grown in strength and confidence with every year. And this year was no different, especially for Jemma, who managed to pull out all the stops and gained an excellent 15th place, which gains her a place in this year's Ulster Schools Championships as well. This result is even more outstanding when you realise that Jemma was competing against both year 11 and 12 girls!
Our final race of the day was the Inter Boys, and as the team consisted of all Year 11 boys, they performed well and finished a commendable 12th overall in the team standings.
Both Emma and Jemma will be in action again on Wednesday 24th February, at the Mallusk Playing Fields.
