GCE Travel and Tourism (Single Award)

No prior study of Travel & Tourism is required for this qualification.

The single award is studied over a 2 year period.

 YEAR 1

Unit 1 – Inside Travel & Tourism   (assessed by exam)

This unit allows you to investigate a wide range of areas in order to answer the following questions:  What is Travel & Tourism?  Why do people travel?  How / why does the industry change?  Future development of the industry.  Organisations involved in the industry.

 Unit 2 – Travel & Tourism – A People Industry (assessed by coursework portfolio)

This unit allows you the opportunity to investigate customer service in the industry.  You will be able to identify what customer service means to an organisation and why excellent customer service is important.  You will also be able to identify the needs of a range of customers and how to provide the services they require.

 Unit 3 – Travel Destinations  (assessed by coursework portfolio)

You will investigate a range of tourist destinations throughout the world.  You will identify  and explain the appeal of these destinations to a range of different tourist types.  The destinations you investigate will be in Europe, North America and Australasia.  The unit will develop your understanding of the tourist trade outside of your own country.

 YEAR 2

Unit 8 – Travel & Tourism Project  (assessed by coursework portfolio)

You will organise an event related to the Travel and Tourism Industry.  You will formulate a business plan that explains areas such as marketing / promotional techniques, resources required, staffing, legal aspects and time scales.  You will work as part of a team therefore improving your communication and team-working skills.

 Unit 9 – Travel & Tourism – People and Quality  (externally moderated assignment)

You will learn about the ways in which travel and tourism organisations manage customer service delivery.   You will develop an appreciation of health, safety and security procedures and legislation.  You will investigate how managers motivate teams in order to deliver high quality customer service.

 Unit 10 – Current issues in Travel & Tourism (assessed by coursework portfolio)

You will carry out an in-depth investigation of one major current issue in travel and tourism, for example, the transmission of disease around the world or the on-going war against terrorism.
