AS / Advanced GCE Art & Design

The course is taken over two years

  • Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Art and Design: AS
  • Advanced GCE in Art & Design: A Level

The AS is the first part of the full Advanced GCE course. the full Advanced GCE comprises the AS and the second half of the Advanced GCE course referred to as the A2.

The AS can be taken as a stand-alone qualification without progression to A2. The Advanced GCE award is made up from the marks from the AS (50%) and the A2 (50%)

AS/ Advanced GCE Art & Design

  • Build on the broad Art & Design experiences gained by candidates who followed the CCEA GCSE Art & Design specification.
  • Promotes a broad art and design experience for AS, and more focused experience for Advanced GCE.
  • Includes a dissertation which enables candidates to explore areas fo the subject which are of particular interest to them.
  • Provides a solid foundation for the study to higher level in art and design, or in areas of study related to art and design.

Course Aims

This course encourages candidates to develop:

  • Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers
  • Investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement.
  • Knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.

Examination Information

AS A2
  1. Fine Art Coursework Unit: 30% of AS
    (15% of A Level)
  2. Design Coursework Unit: 30% of AS
    (15% of A Level)
  3. Externally Set Assignment: 40% of AS
    (20% of A Level)
  1. Dissertation Coursework: 15% of A Level
  2. Fine Art and/or Design Coursework: 15% of A Level
  3. Externally Set Assignment: 20% of A Level

Fine Art
Coursework provides opportunities for work in a range of material and processes such as drawing, painting, printmaking, lens-based media, sculpture, performance, installation, computer generated and manipulated imagery.

Design
Coursework provides opportunities to work in design areas such as graphics (includig computer graphics and text), lens-based media, ceramics, jewellery, embroidery, product fashion, textiles, illustration, theatre, environmental (internal & external)

The specification requires that candidates must demonstrate competence in working in both two dimensions and three dimensions through coursework units AS 1 and AS 2.
