A Level English Literature
The new Advanced Levels are comprised of two parts. The first part is the new AS which must be combined with the second part A2, to form the Advanced Level qualification.
What will I study?
The course consists of six modules taken over two years. Three Units are taken in the first year of the course, leading to an Advanced Subsidiary qualification. The final three units are studied in the second year of the course and will lead to an Advanced level qualification in English Literature.

| Unit 1: The Modern Novel This unit represents the introduction to the whole course. You will study one novel and will be assessed through an open-text examination. |
Unit 4: Texts in time This is a closed book examination. You will answer two questions, one from each section of the paper. One question will be on pre-1900 poetry and the other on pre-1770 drama. |
| Unit 2: Shakespeare You will be required to study one Shakespeare play and produce a piece of coursework of approximately 2000 words |
Unit 5: Literary Connections This unit provides you with the opportunity to focus on ways in which texts relate to each other. The assessment is carried out either through coursework or written examination |
| Unit 3: Texts in Context This unit requires you to study one prose and one poetry text, one of which must have been written before 1900. Assessment will be through open-text examination |
Unit 6: Reading for Meaning This is the synoptic unit, taken at the end of the course. It is assessed through a three hour examination, made up of several tasks related to a set topic of study. |
Where can this course take me?
This course will provide you with the opportunity to progress to Higher Education and also provides a pathway into a range of careers such as teaching, publishing, advertising and journalism
Who can complete the course?
Students who have achieved GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Literature may apply for a place on this course.
