Aims of the course
- Develop and apply knowledge, skill and understanding of Physical Education through selected practical activities.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of the factors that affect participation and performance.
- Understand rules and conventions in selected activities.
- Promote understanding of the health benefits and risks associated with participation in physical activity.
- Develop the skills necessary to analyse and improve performance.
- Adopt different roles in selected activities when working with others.
Theory Content
Section 1 (3.1.1)
The range of physical activities and the different roles that the active participant can choose from in which to participate
- includes topics such as the demands of performance; injury; difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise; and characteristics and benefits of leisure and recreation.
Section 2 (3.1.2)
Linking physical activity with diet, work and rest for personal health and a balanced healthy lifestyle
- includes topics such as health, fitness and a healthy lifestyle; training; and diet.
Section 3 (3.1.3)
Making informed decisions about getting involved in a lifetime of physical activities that suit their needs
- includes topics such as school influences; emotional health and wellbeing; cultural and social factors; opportunities and pathways available for becoming or remaining involved in physical activity; and international and other factors.
Practical Component
Students can choose to participate as player/performer, organiser, leader/coach, choreographer or official.
For full course: 4 assessments of which 2 must be as a player/performer and must include activities from at least 2 groups/ways of thinking.
The assessment of all activities is divided into two Key Processes.
Key Process A – Developing skills in physical activity
Key Process B – Being creative and making decisions.
Achievement in each of the two areas is assessed using a scale of 1–10 marks.
* Key Process C- Evaluating and improving, is assessed for one activity in the practical unit using a scale of 1-10 marks.
PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES
Group 1—Outwitting opponents as in Games Activities
Group 2—Accurate replication of actions, phrases and sequences as in Gymnastics Activities
Group 3— Exploring and communicating ideas, concepts and emotions as in Dance Activities
Group 4—Performing at maximum levels in relation to speed, height, distance, strength or accuracy as in Athletic Activities
Group 5—Identifying and solving problems to overcome challenges of an adventurous nature, as in life saving, personal survival swimming and Outdoor and Adventurous activities
Group 6—Exercising safely and effectively to improve health and well-being as in fitness and health activities
Assessment
Written Paper 1.5 hours – 40% of the Marks (80 marks)
Practical Coursework – 60% of the Marks (90 marks)
Programme Timetable
- Course lasts for two full years
- 5 periods of G.C.S.E PE per week
- Minimum of 2 homeworks per week
- Dress Code is Full School PE Kit with optional school tracksuit
