Technology and Design is an ever changing subject and with the new specification we have moved to a much more graphical and Computer Aided Design aspect in the subject.
The pupils complete an IDOCK yr10 project which is a good example of the direction Technology and Design has gone in the past 2 years. It is obvious through our increase in numbers that the pupils see the relevance and benefits of studying this subject at GSCE.
We are now not just a male orientated subject with the main focus being on Design, Graphics, Plastics and Folder work whereby girls excel with their creativity and presentational skills.
Technology and Design is 60% coursework. This allows the teacher to monitor the pupils progress over the 2-year course.
How is the course divided?
This GCSE is divided in to 4 Units studied over a 2 year period:
Year 11 – Unit 1 & Unit 4
- This consists of a Design assignment worth 20%. It is completed under informal supervision within 13 hours.
- Theory core content is a modular exam worth 20% in June of yr11 – we delivery the theory content with a balance of mini practical projects to underpin the knowledge gained.
Year 12 – Unit 2/3 & Unit 5
- This is when we begin our main project to be completed within 30 hours incorporating a design folder worth 40%. We will use Computer Aided Design as our main tool when manufacturing our final product.
- Written exam part 2 worth 20%
Laser Cutter
The department incorporates the New Laser cutter as a major part of our design and manufacturing throughout the main practical project.
We as a department see the importance of STEM areas in relation to providing guidance for pupils for potential Career paths.
